Parameter

I think it would make more sense if |Country= was replaced with |Federation= as there are other players who play (or played) under the FIDE flag especially after the commencement of Russia–Ukraine War, Ian Nepo for an example. Template:Background colour and for it to be displayed on the country parameter is kind of sus. Some played under the FIDE flag when they were switching federations, Alireza Firouzja for an example. Readers who are unfamiliar with the chess milieu, as most Wikipedia readers are, will not know what to make of "Federation".
Note that there are hundreds if not thousands of chess biography articles, so any change to this infobox template must be made in a compatible way. Bruce leverett (talk) 13:37, 9 August 2024 (UTC)
I have came across BOTs with the ability to perform such changes and it wouldn't be first time such a change has been made. I am also not that much of a chess fan but I just read about Carlsen—Niemann fued few hours ago. I heard Magnus talking about Nepo then I quickly looked him up and how the SCC is going, and that's how I noticed this thing on Alireza's profile and other chess players. There's |Born= for their birth countries, but using |Country= for a FIDE flag is definitely not the way to go. dxneo (talk) 14:01, 9 August 2024 (UTC)

Template:Infobox person has an RfC for possible consensus regarding the removal of color from person infoboxes. A discussion is taking place. If you would like to participate in the discussion, you are invited to add your comments on the discussion page. Thank you. — Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:30, 2 October 2025 (UTC)

Something has gone wrong recently

Something has changed fairly recently, I think with this infobox, and now the Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov infoboxes (and maybe others) are not displaying correctly - quite a bit of info missing. When the "module" field is removed, these infoboxes seem to display correctly. The change was after 17-August this year, because on that date, I made a comment about the "years active" in the Kasparov infobox; and now that is not displaying at all. Template:Ping Template:Fixed that was my error. fixed it! should all be good now. - Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 06:13, 7 October 2025 (UTC)

Embedding problem

Template:Re When this infobox is embedded within Template:Infobox person two subheadings appear: Sports career and Chess career. Khiikiat (talk) 15:18, 7 October 2025 (UTC)

Fixed in the sandbox, I think, by copying the format from {{Infobox gymnast}}. Template:U? See the testcases page. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:36, 7 October 2025 (UTC)
Hmmm... Template:Ping I'm stumped. You definitely seem to have the right approach but now the first testcase is broken... The Chess Career golden header is missing. I need to do some other stuff at the moment but will get into it later if you don't fix it before I get a chance.
Template:Ping thanks for catching my errors here. I should have done more thorough testing when I converted this. Definitely a lesson learned. If we can't suss out the problem in the next few hours I will revert the changes until the sandbox fixes it. We will make this right today! Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:51, 7 October 2025 (UTC)
Ok should be fixed now! @Jonesey95 there was actually an issue with {{Infobox sportsperson}} (see diff). The if statement wasn't accounting for |module2=. Didn't show up on {{Infobox gymnast}} because that sets other params that were included in the if statement. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 19:36, 7 October 2025 (UTC)

Fix double newline issue

Template:Edit extended-protected

Please replace

}}
<noinclude>

with

}}<noinclude>

or alternatively

}}<!--
--><noinclude>

This is necessary (and is done by all other templates) since otherwise all articles that include a blank line between the template and the article's text show up with extra spacing at the top of the article, see for example the article Mikhail Tal where this is causing an extra <br> to be rendered.
